Roosevelt's Rule of Three

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

Dear you,

Wow time flies. It’s been a couple months since my last newsletter and I’ve decided it’s about time for me to plan a holiday. My friend described it well and I’ve been ‘anchoring’ myself ever since I returned from the US just over 18 months ago. Within 3 months of returning home, I bought a car, a surfboard and started drinking the Aussie flat white.

Lately I’ve grown accustomed to spending a big portion of my weekend alone. When I told a friend of mine, they were both shocked and inspired by the fact that I frequently visit coffee shops alone. In fact, I’m sitting at Bills alone right now typing this very letter.

So what’s new? I won’t harp on about my Nokia and analogue lifestyle choices. Although I did convince a close friend to convert to the brick phone and he even one-upped me by getting a model that lets you hotspot instead of being dependent on cafe wifi.

I guess the latest update on my end is me coming to the realization that l’m about to enter the second of three major life stages. I’m 28 years old and part of me feels like I’ve over stayed my welcome in the first stage. I don’t know whether it’s comfort or complacency but I’m hungry to elevate to the second stage and embrace the challenges that come with it.

🏄‍♂️ My ideal weekend

My weekends have lately been running like clockwork. Below’s a snapshot of what I enjoy most.

Saturday

Midday - Farmer’s market

Afternoon - Cook Moribyan’s recipes

Evening - Movie

Sunday

Morning - Surf

Midday - The Economist reading

Afternoon - Golf 9 holes

Evening - Newsletter

💬 Made you think

Do they have the car? We have the driver.

F1 (2025) final lap scene.

Brad Pitt’s F1 movie was so good, I saw it twice in cinemas. Everything from the soundtrack to the cast was on point. Spoiler alert. When Lewis Hamilton crashes into Lori Harvey’s ex, the commentator asks the question “do they have the car?” The owner’s response gave me chills. Sometimes I focus too much on acquiring the “best car” in different facets of life but that’s no guarantee for success. It reminds me of Theodore Roosevelt’s Rule of 3 which says “do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

Hope you’re keeping well otherwise. Do hit reply if anything resonated with you.
