Running towards life again

How do you go back to the Buick?

Dear you,

First things first…I got my first Parker pen. It’s a Silver Jotter Fountain Pen with refillable blue ink (because they were out of black). It flows effortlessly on the page and I’m loving it. Here’s a snippet of entries I’ve written in my moleskin since saying goodbye to ballpoint pens:

  • It’s 7pm, I’m having Sicilian pistachio ice cream. I had a great Barry’s class this morning. It was someone’s 1000th class. It would take 20 years if she went once a week or 10 years if she went twice a week.

  • It’s 2am, I’ve come back from a long day and a wholesome night. I’m happy I stayed back and heard about [their] Umrah trip. It’s inspiring me to go early next year.

🎃 Pumpkin Spice Latte Season

For an early Halloween celebration, I dressed up as Gomez Addams in the office. Whilst most people were referencing either Netflix’s Wednesday series or the 1960’s Addams Family TV series, I thought it was cool that the characters actually all originated from a 1940’s cartoon in the New Yorker magazine. I haven’t seen either of the shows but apparently my oversized pinstriped suit was pretty on point.

🙋‍♂️ Rollcall

Locket recently launched a new app feature called Rollcall which I thought was a clever name. It pulls on nostalgia (which is trending apparently amongst marketers) given that many of us can recall saying “here” when our name was called at the beginning of class or at the start of a school day. The app lets you upload photos at the end of the week in what feels like a visual “here.”

She’s The One (1996)

💬 Made you think

I stumbled across this movie, She’s The One (1996), the other night and it opened with a simple scene that completely hooked me. There’s two brothers out on a boat and one starts telling the other how he’s been running away from life instead of running towards it. He suggests it’s a good time now to turn around and start running towards life again.

Speaking of running, I’m doing the JP Morgan corporate run in a week and half which will be my third race in the last 3 months. Both literally and figuratively speaking, it feels good to start running towards something again.

It’s like you’ve been driving a Buick your whole life. Then suddenly you’re behind the wheel of a brand-new Porsche. How do you go back to the Buick?

Today I realized it doesn’t take much for me to feel inspired and content. A bit of sunlight, a bit of face time with family, a few check-ins with friends, a newspaper in one hand, a cold or warm drink in the other and a good song playing in the car ride home.

Till next time,

Azam
